1. Torch-On Waterproofing Membrane
Currently the most widely used waterproofing in South Africa. Torch-on membrane is supplied in 10x1M rolls ranging from 3-5mm in thickness, which is heat fused onto the surface with the edge overlapping the next roll until the complete area is covered. The waterproofing must be finished off with a UV protection layer (usually silver).
✅ Pros: Tried and tested, offers years of protections if correctly installed. Versatile – single layer for general applications and dual layer for more robust applications.
❌ Cons: Requires professional installation, can be costly upfront, generally not suitable for balcony slabs, requires UV protection and periodic maintenance
2. Liquid Systems
Many products fall under this category, but, generally made up of acrylics and polyurethane waterproofing options. Some product options require a reinforcing membrane / mesh others may not depending on the intended application. Newer technology products like polyurethanes generally offer superior performance with a premium cost while older technologies like acrylics offer reasonable performance at a reasonable prices.
✅ Pros: Although this is highly product specific, the main advantage is having a seamless waterproofing system which is for the most part UV stable and flexible to apply to a wide variety of surfaces / shapes. Additionally these products are suitable for balcony slabs
❌ Cons: The cost in respect of polyurethanes and for acrylics maintenance requirements every 2-3 years
3. Cementitious Waterproofing Products
Cost effective waterproofing and relatively versatile, however, cement based products are prone to cracking. Generally recommended that it is applied with a reinforcing membrane / mesh.
✅ Pros: best suited to tanking, floor sealing, small roof sections and similar applications.
❌ Cons: Not suitable for larger roof slabs and requires a UV resistant top coat
4. Other Waterproofing Options
TPO / PVC and EPDM Waterproofing are additional options which are not overly prevalent currently. Both systems can be mechanically fastened to the roof surface with the overlaps bonded by heat in the case of TPO and chemically in the case of EPDM. Both systems require expert installation and can be relatively costly.
